- Kubrick, Stanley
- b. 1928, New York (USA)Film-makerThough his early films were produced in Hollywood, Kubrick’s finest and most innovative work is British. He emigrated to the UK in 1961 and his first British film was an adaptation of Nabokov’s Lolita (1962). This was followed by the classic anti-war satire, Dr Strangelove (1964). The success of these films led to Kubrick being the first director to take full artistic control over his work. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and A Clockwork Orange (1971) are testaments to his overall vision of film making, both visually intense and narratively confusing. Reaction to A Clockwork Orange made Kubrick rethink his artistic direction, and since 1971 he has made only three films: Barry Lyndon (1975), The Shining (1980) and Full Metal Jacket (1987). His first film for twelve years, Eyes Wide Shut, with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, is due to be released in 1999.SAM JOHNSTONE
